After the center of gravity measurements on the URE04, URE measured the three moments of inertia of the URE04. This was done in preparation for the setup of our next car and measures the turning moment of the car when pitching, rolling and turning.
With our self developed optical speed sensor and a simple gyro-sensor the slip-angle of the tires can be measured. Together with strain gauges on the push and pull rods the entire behavior of the car can be analyzed to help our race-engineer with the set-up. For this purpose there are a few parameters of the car needed, including the moments of inertia.
By hanging the car on a pendulum and measuring the period time, the inertia values can be directly calculated with the help of Steiner’s Theorem.

Center of gravity measurements have been done on the URE04 in the past week. Using our tilt table the place of the center of gravity with and without driver, and with different ride heights have been measured. The data we got from these measurements will be used to optimize our vehicle models and make sure the URE05 will have even better handling.
